Maine: Understanding the Law Regarding the Sale and Use of Lead Sinkers and Lead Jigs

The sale and use of lead sinkers and unpainted lead jigs less than 2.5 inches long and/or weighing less than 1 ounce is currently prohibited.

Beginning September 1, 2024, the SALE of painted lead jigs less than 2.5 inches long and/or weighing less than 1 ounce is prohibited; and beginning September 1, 2026, the USE of painted lead jigs less than 2.5 inches long and/or weighing less than 1 ounce is prohibited.

The prohibited USE of lead sinkers and jigs is interpreted to apply to all inland waters and not to tidal waters.

"Lead sinker" means a device that contains lead that is designed to be attached to a fishing line and intended to sink the line.

"Lead sinker" and "lead jigs" do not include artificial lures, weighted line, or weighted flies.

The measurement of the lead sinker or lead jig shall include all components that are permanently manufactured to the lead itself. This does not include any additional items that have been added to the original manufactured device.

Who is our resident interpreter? What is this telling us?

Not buying it.

IF they had not been waging a nationwide war on lead for, what? Nigh on 3 or 4 decades now, and...
IF they had not already been caught lying to us multiple times about lead supposedly poisoning this or that (mostly birds) and then it coming out later that it wasn't true, and they knew it wasn't true, and...
IF they had not been soundly caught lying to us so thoroughly and so vastly on so many things in so many areas over the last 10 years or so
Then I MIGHT actually believe them.
But I don't.
I hear ya. but I won't let them steal Acadia from me. Its special.

Well, I understand, That's why I asked if anyone had a place to buy Tungsten on the cheap. I want to fish more and more in areas where lead is restricted. So if I buy a few tungsten weights here and a few tungsten jigs there, while continuing to use up my lead here I'll soon be in compliance. I couldn't justify switching everything at once but a little here and a little there and its done.

I already think I'm too far north as it is. I've been to Maine and swam in Acadia in August, hmmm, '07 IIRC. Got cousins up there as my grandfather's brother and one of his sisters settled up there after the boys returned returned from WWII. The water was too frigid to stay in and flies ate everything that wasn't under the frigid water. You can have it. Good luck on your quest for tungsten.

I'm OK for this trip with lead I believe but in Sept and next year they get more strict. New Hamshire and VT are there as well to some degree. It seems that Loons (I'm not talking about you or me) are getting these in their digestive system and dying. I guess tungsten goes right through. I don't know. But there is nothing like visiting the Island (Acadia). you can catch Mackerel, Cod and so forth one minute, drive a mile and catch Brownies or bass.
Loons are only being harmed by fresh water lead. The lead that’s not regulated in salt water up there is not. Got it! trying to understand libtards mentality

Just like ducks I would prefer tungsten over lead just for size to weight but cost wise no way

Well enjoy. I'd avoid any place that had regs like that.

Possible. Im not worried about the no sale, It wont be instantaneous. You'll have plenty of time to stock up. As long as its not a usage ban
I'll stock up a few pieces at a time and use up the lead in PA. It won't hurt too much. However, I think it is VT doesn't even let you have any lead in your tackle box. Possession of lead is not allowed.
