Only Crappie

Only one I ever caught down south and none since. I caught it in a pond on a brim buster. Thought it was taking the pole. Neighbor took it home in a pail full of shellcracker to eat. I don’t think I’ve pics of shellcracker but just imagine huge brim.

This crappie was 2lbs 5oz. Texted a buddy who fished all over and he asked if I was mounting it. It was in a fryer by then I suspect lol. Another pic shows it’s as long as a 5 gal pail. Sorry for pic of pic. On an old storage drive.

No clue how big they get but my buddy said he knows guys who’ve chased them decades and not caught one that size. I was def not expecting it in a pond. Same pond had 30yr+ old Koi monsters. Owner told me to catch the “white carp” if I wanted lol. Once I explained they could be priceless and he’d need an expert to move them he was happy I didn’t catch them. I’m not sure if they are still there or not. Had heard the entire farm was now development extension but heard from the property owner and he’d finally moved to the farm it sounded. 75-100 acres was worth many $mm and was my best deer property so bummed he didn’t cash out and bummed I haven’t been going down to hunt it lol.

That is a nice one but still small. For what they can get. Gotta lake I fish they are like 2 feet long and close to 5lbs. As big as dinner plates. Very hard to catch.

Pa state record 4lb 3 oz world record 5lb 3oz and 21 inches long biggest one I’ve ever seen in Pa was Randy Z’s at 17 inches caught 2 years ago

Yeah, the record there was a lot bigger than what I’d caught and black vs spotted was different to. Think it was 2.5 and 4.5 lbs or something. Forget which variety was known bigger. Wasn’t winning any records, except maybe for tackle caught on. Friend was pretty excited to see pics though. They mostly chased Striper in Kerr lake. Never seen any in NY much bigger than brim.

Rather than a cricket I’d put a baby brim minnow on the cane pole lol. Some things don’t change.

Guess some guys mount 7-8 lbs largemouth too. My son wanted to mount a 19.5” rainbow he caught. I keep saying a real big one maybe but big keeps getting bigger lol.

Nothing wrong with a 19.5” rainbow but tell him if he wants a mount go for the trophy rainbow.

For big crappie if you wanna see them they put them in the tionesta fish hatchery aquarium. They usually put a couple in when they do the electric shock surveys on lakes around the area.

I used to get quite a few slabs ice fishing at night but nothing quite that size.

Bass Pro and Cabelas usually have some big ones in their aquariums, Cabelas definitely has the better aquariums.

I’ve seen them in Cabelas, Hamburg I think. If memory is good they had a pretty large black crappy. We always called them Strawberry Bass up north and never saw the black variety. I’ve gotten a few up there as a kid when I couldn’t entice the bass. I’d put a tiny white grub on a closed faced reel and tow it behind the row boat. 99.9% I’d miss by the time I stopped rowing to grab rod. Fairly certain I had no concept of anything called split shot at the time so all surface grabs. Lake was maybe 9’ in center so likely didn’t matter, lol.

Pymatuning has a very healthy population of LARGE slabs. We do not target them specifically but have gotten numerous 18-20" Crappie while chasing Walleye
