Anyone ever get out and try to find any. Evertime I go I never found one. Zig zagged miles threw weeds and brush. Last year I set up a trap and got one then when I went to some trout waters I saw one laying on the side of the road. Seems the best time to find them at least for me is not to look haha.

I’ve only ever found 2 sheds it’s easier to find a matching set when they’re still mounted lol

I’ve always wanted to do it. People always says you have to go on the south side of a hill where the sun hits most, yada yada but who knows. I have found a few nice racks while trout fishing. One set literally popped off and while I know you’re not suppose to, I took them and gave them to my dad as rattling calls.

Found a few by chance in the spring while trout fishing or turkey hunting. Dad and nieces husband has found several this season along with a couple matching sets. Couple deer we had on camera or seen on the hoof.669413251.jpgIMG_8105.jpgIMG_8195.jpg

Why aren’t you suppose to?

I’ve never looked for them. I have two friends that shed hunt almost everyday this time of year. They are pretty successful at finding them. I think the key is you have to get out everyday to look and you have to continually check the same places as you don’t know when they are going to fall off. they always say the thick brush is where they find most sheds because they get knocked off when the deer walk through the woods. 2nd best are the bedding areas during a really Dewey morning. The deer get up and violently shake the water off themselves just like a wet dog does and this will cause the sheds to fall off.

Could be an old wives tale but I was always under the impression that harvesting antlers from a deer, whether freshly hit roadside or found in a stream could lead to poaching accusations and must be reported.

What you can’t do​

  • According to the Game Commission, it is illegal for individuals to possess a shed antler to sell, barter or trade. It’s also unlawful to offer to sell, barter or trade any shed antler.
  • It’s illegal to put together any device that would induce antler shedding.
Example: Surrounding a feeding plot with chains so that the deer must put their heads through the chains, potentially inducing their antlers to fall off.

  • It is also illegal to take any antlers that are still attached to a head, including dead deer or elk.

(a) General rule.--It is unlawful for any person to aid, abet, attempt or conspire to hunt for or take or possess, use, transport or conceal any game or wildlife unlawfully taken or not properly marked or any part thereof, or to hunt for, trap, take, kill, transport, conceal, possess or use any game or wildlife contrary to the provisions of this title.

(d) Exceptions.--This section shall not apply to:

(1) Authorized individuals who euthanize critically injured game or wildlife, which shall be permitted when it is reasonable to believe that the chance of survival of the injured game or wildlife is minimal or the injured game or wildlife poses a threat to human safety.

(2) Individuals who find and retain for their own use any deer or elk antler which is shed through natural causes. This paragraph shall not be construed to permit any individual possessing a shed antler to sell, barter or trade or to offer to sell, barter or trade any shed antler.

Spent the last month driving in and out of wild life. In Ketchum the wild herd is loose in town. Interestingly they don’t seem to hurt anyone. Most have lost their antlers. Only a couple hanging on. Some with singles.

Dad found this massive State Game Land shed Saturday 4/2. Have him frequent on camera in velvet, then he disappeared! Come last week he was back in the open woods of SGL dropping his rack!buck 2021(1)(1).jpgIMG_8571.jpg
Measured 72 2/8". Booner for sure! Many days will be spent searching for the larger left side.

SL and TF are probably pinning it with a gps tag after finding it using your EXIF data, lol. That’s a beautiful deer for any state in the US. More impressive he grew that in the somewhat nutritional and habitat limited PA.
